Avoid all water in the ears for 2 weeks following insertion of the ventilation tubes to allow the eardrum to seal around the tube. After this, it is important to avoid all soapy and shampoo containing water from entering the ears as this as this fluid with a lowered surface tension can sometimes enter the small opening in the ventilation tube and cause infection within the middle ear.
Normal swimming on the surface is not usually a problem and ear plugs are not required for this water exposure. If an older child or adult wishes to dive under water, then we recommending the fitting and use of Proplugs which have a small perforation.
Sometimes after, there is a discharge from the grommet and into the canal. This often indicates continuing drainage of fluid that has been deep within the middle ear. Unless this becomes infected, it is not a problem and can be gently dabbed away. If the discharge becomes purulent or smelly, this often signals infection and should be communicated to Mr Burgess.
This may require blotting and sometimes topical antibiotic drops. If drops are prescribed, 2-3 drops are inserted with the ear upper most, into the ear canal and gently pumping on the front of the ear, called the tragus to allow them to penetrate deeper into the ear canal and middle ear. Patients should lie on their side for 5-10 minutes after insertion of the drops. If you develop pain or increasing discharge, please contact Mr Burgess.
You will have an appointment made after the insertion, typically, this is usually 4 weeks.
